Obesity

News log

  • Myth or Fact? Simple Math: 3500 calories = one pound? If it's fat then it's about a pound, but if it's lean (muscle, etc.) then it's about six (6) pounds. The average female maintenance level is 2000-2100 calories per day. (For the average male it is 2700-2900 calories per day.) Thus, a female consumes approximaltey 14,000 calories per week. To lose a pound a week, she needs to consume approximately 650 calories for three days in the week. The best time to do it is during the work-week when your mind is busy on other things.

Intermittent Fasting to Lose Weight

The Trouble with Fructose

(YouTube) The Trouble with Fructose. Posted 10/21/2011. By Robert Lustig, MD. The accompanying slides are here. Summary: leptin and insulin resistance.

  • Obesity means leptin resistance, or "brain starvation"
  • The starvation response causes recidivism.
  • Energy expenditure and quality of life are the same thing.
  • Defects in insulin signaling promote leptin resistance.
  • Insulin appears to be an "endogenous leptin antagonist".
  • Fructos, by driving de novo lipogenesis, induces hepatic insulin resistance, driving both weight gain and continued consumption.
  • Our environment is insulinogenic; we have to "get the insulin down".

Sucrose, on the other hand, does not produces the same effect. You would have to eat a lot of sucrose to gain weight.
