Water Filtering

• Distilled water. You can get distilled water from any grocery store for very cheap. However, to save money in the long term, I make my own distilled water. I do a two-step process of taking filtered water from an under sink reverse osmosis system and then distill it via a countertop water distiller. I use the reverse osmosis system from Lowe's (Whirlpool Triple-Stage Reverse Osmosis Membrane Under Sink Water Filtration System), and the countertop water distillers (I have two) from Amazon (Megahome Countertop Water Distiller) and Walmart (CO-Z Stainless Steel Water Distiller). The Megahome distiller is nicer but also twice as expensive. Another plus for the CO-Z distiller is that it completes the distillation in 4 hours versus 5.5 hours due to the higher wattage (i.e. 700 watts versus 580 watts).
• Water distiller cost per gallon. The Megahome Countertop Water Distiller (from Amazon) consumes 2,900 watts to produce one gallon of distilled water (i.e. 5 hours at 580 watts per hour to produce one gallon). Assuming your electricity costs 12 cents per kWh, then the cost to produce one gallon of distilled water is 35 cents (see Electricity Bill Calculator to compute the cost). If you are consuming one gallon of distilled water a day, the water distiller will pay for itself in about a year.

Fluoride in Water

The maximum contaminant level allowed in drinking water by federal law is two parts per million (2.0 ppm). Fluoridated public water supply is supposed to be effective at levels of 0.7 ppm (or 0.7 mg of fluoride per liter of water). However, they try to maintain a level of 1.5 - 2.5 ppm. Concentrations above 5 ppm are detrimental to tooth structure.

• The Dangers of Consuming Fluoride. Overwhelming evidence shows that fluoride reduces the functionality of the thyroid gland if you have low iodine intake. As a result of this, you may experience weight gain and depression.

• How Much Fluoride Is In Bottled Water. Posted 8/22/2011. The article is pro-fluoride, but has good information on bottled water. It turns out, most bottled water contains some fluoride, anywhere from 0.01 ppm to 0.74 ppm of fluoride. A level of 0.74 is effectively city water. The ones with the least are: Aquafina (from 0.01 to 0.09 ppm), Deja Blue (from 0.01 to 0.10), Ice Mountain (from 0.01 to 0.07), and Ozarka (from 0.07 to 0.09).
• How to Remove Fluoride from Drinking Water - Preventing Fluorosis. Reverse osmosis, activated alumina defluoridation filter, and distillation filtration will remove fluoride. However, these are all expensive to the average consumer. Brita, Pur, and most other filters do NOT remove fluoride. Boiling water will CONCENTRATE fluoride rather than reduce it.

• The Fluoride Deception exposes the truth about water fluoridation and the phosphate mining industry.
• Nazis. Nazis put fluoride (usually a toxic byproduct of the aluminum industry) in the water in the concentration camps to make the prisoners more docile. Prozac is mainly this type of fluoride. It's one of the primary causes of bone loss.
• Safely Avoid and Remove Dangerous Man-Made Fluoride, Part II. Boron is a good fluoride remover and it has been proven effective in studies around the world. Borax should be taken in very small quantities in pure water. As little as 1/32 to 1/4 of a teaspoon of borax in one liter of water consumed in small quantities throughout the day has been found to be safe and effective. About 1/8 of a teaspoon with a pinch of sea salt has been found to be particularly effective. Food grade sodium borate may be substituted for common borax. Iodine has been clinically proven to increase the removal of fluoride from the body via the urine.
